Vegans Find A Space
The Grumpy Vegan’s debut article at Hastings Online Times is called Vegans Find A Space, which is about vegan living and eating in Hastings and St Leonards on Sea.
With its origins as a medieval fishing village, it’s not surprising, perhaps, that eating out in Hastings and St Leonards emphasises fish, locally caught, and, of course, meat. But what if you’re vegetarian or vegan or someone who wants to eat meat-free? What are your options?
Website of the Week

Nothing makes the Grumpy Vegan fill with rage (well, actually, there’s quite a few things that makes the Grumpy Vegan fill with rage) than thinking about the animals we shot into space.
Monkeys in Space is one of those quirky Web sites which someone with an obsession put together because they did not want us to forget that we shot animals into space. Which is why this is Web site of the Week. Otherwise, we forget. Only the French, methinks, could come up with the idea of sending cats into space. Felix francophobia or some such.

Only David Cameron could believe that you make ordinary families work harder by making them poorer and you make the rich work harder by making them richer.
Italian Peasant Vegan Feast
- Some of the 30 guests at the vegan feast tuck in with Renee serving them, too.
- Tomato and basil salad, organically grown locally at Pannel Organics
- Maresa Bossano, host of Love Food Cafe, serves her delicious Celeriac, beetroot and apple salad
The Grumpy Vegan greatly enjoyed the Italian Peasant Vegan Feast prepared by Maresa Bossano of LOVE Food held this weekend at the Beacon, an arts hub, on the West Hill in Hastings.
The menu consisted of Grilled polenta with grilled aubergine, cherry tomatoes, green olive and almond tapenade. This was followed by Tuscan chickpea soup served with Ciabatta and Walnut Sourdough. The main meal was a selection of salads and dishes, including Caponata, Courgette squash and lentil salad, Tomato and basil salad, Pinto beans with sage and garlic, Celeriac, beetroot and apple salad, Wild mushroom risotto and Green salad. The dessert was Tiramisu and Pears poached in balsamic vinegar and rosemary and coffee and cinnamon.
Virtually all of the vegetables and salads were grown organically and locally by Pannel Organics.
This dinner was in a series of so far five (or is it four?) occasional meals. This feast was attended by 30 people, who ranged from non-vegans to vegans. Photographs courtesy of Gary Baverstock. Click and click again on each one to see a bigger view.
Stupid Comment of the Day
New Gear To Protect Sea Life by Cornelia Dean in The New York Times.
“It’s part of the collateral damage fishing causes,” said Tim Werner, who directs the marine conservation engineering program at the New England Aquarium. “You deploy a net and catch a turtle, put out a pot for a lobster and entangle a whale, put out a trawl and pull up coral.” The problem affects marine species around the world, many of them endangered. Though much attention is paid to overfishing, “often our greatest impact is not on the species we target to catch but the species we did not intend to catch,” Mr. Werner said. “The seafood on your plate,” he added, “is not the only animal that gave its life to feed you.”
The Grumpy Vegan wonders if Tim Werner asks personally every animal he eats if they’re willing to give their life to feed him. Further, what would he do if someone asked him that question.
