There are many admirable animal protection organizations. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list.

- Animal Farm Foundation - Dedicated to helping the American Pit Bull Terrier.
- The Animals Voice - The encyclopedic Web site and the vital printed magazine.
- Catastrophes Cat Rescue - This no-kill sanctuary is home for more than 200 cats who need and deserve that extra-special attention.
- Farmed Animal Watch - An indispensable e-newsletter on news and trends in farmed animal welfare issues.
- Green is the New Red - Corporations and politicians label activists "eco-terrorists" and national security threats.
- Grey2K USA - Dedicated to ending greyhound racing.
- International Animal Rescue - Hands-on rescue and the provision of short or long term rehabilitation.
- Open Rescue - To give aid, rescue and provide veterinary treatment to suffering animals primarily in factory farms.
- Pet-Abuse.Com - Researches and tracks incidents of criminal animal cruelty.
- Wayne Pacelle - The blog of HSUS's president and CEO.
- World Animal Net - The world's largest network of animal protection societies with consultative status at the UN.
Animals and the Law
Animal law is an exciting development in animal protection. Increasing numbers of law students, scholars and schools are studying and teaching animal law. The animal protection movement needs to encourage animal law, which the Grumpy Vegan sees as the fourth stage (litigation) in the five-stage analysis of social justice.
- Animal Law Review - Animal Law Review is a student-run law review at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon.
- Animal Legal & Historical Web Center - The most comprehensive source of informaion about the legal status of animals.
- Animal Legal Defense Fund - ALDF has been pushing the U.S. legal system successfully to end the suffering of abused animals for more than 20 years.
- Animal Welfare Act - The U.S. Government's Federal Animal Welfare Act.
- Journal of Animal Law & Ethics - The Journal of Animal Law and Ethics is an independent journal at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
- Meyer Glitzenstein & Crystal - Public interest law firm provides high quality legal services and advocacy for animal and environmental protection groups.
- NABR Animal Law Section - A surprisingly useful Web site even though it's produced by the National Association for Biomedical Research!
- National Center for Animal Law - The center, which is at the Lewis & Clark Law School (Portland, OR), trains law students in animal and environmental law.
Archives and Museums
Here are some wonderful online archives and museums dedicated to vegetarianism and animal rights.
- An American Philosopher: The Career of Tom Regan - Documents the life work of the distinguished animal rights philosopher and author of The Case for Animal Rights and Empty Cages.
- Animal Rights History - A free online library, literary research resource, timeline and historical literature archive.
- Animal Rights Library - A useful collection of texts from classical and contemporary authors.
- Edward Carpenter Forum - Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was a proponent of a "larger" Socialism which embraced the liberation of the emotional and spiritual life along with the economic.
- Guardian's Animal Rights Page - One-stop shopping for animal rights articles published in The Guardian.
- Henry S. Salt - This is a comprehensive Web site dedicated to Henry S. Salt, author of Animals' Rights and founder of the Humanitarian League.
- The Order of the Golden Age - A history of the Order of the Golden Age, which was a religious food reform movement in the late 1800s and early/mid 20th century. It was founded in 1881 by Rev. H.J. Williams (1838 -1919).
- Stallwood Animal Rights Archive on LibraryThing Web site - The Kim W. Stallwood Animal Rights Archive is a collection that I have built since I became a vegetarian in 1974 (I have been a vegan since 1976). The collection includes books, journals, magazines, newsletters, artefacts, audio visual materials and public educational materials (flyers, leaflets, posters, etc.). I am cataloguing my collection of books on the LibraryThing Web site.
- The Tom Regan Animal Rights Archive - This is the world's largest collection of animal rights and related materials, which I'm proud to say I had a role in helping to build with the addition of the Animal Rights Network Collection.
- The Vegetarian Museum - The Vegetarian Museum’s rooms feature articles, letters, journal entries, book excerpts, illustrations and photographs that reveal much of the story of vegetarianism in America from the 18th Century to today.
Arts and Culture
The Grumpy Vegan's fragile temperament is soothed by the arts.
- Galerie St. Etienne - The Galerie St. Etienne is the oldest gallery in the U.S. specializing in Austrian & German Expressionism, which includes some of my favorite artists (e.g., Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele and Käthe Kollwitz) and, of course, Sue Coe.
- Graphic Witness - Beside being home to Sue Coe Direct, Graphic Witness is a brilliant compendium of the best in art with a progressive message.
- Sue Coe Direct - The Grumpy Vegan thinks Sue Coe's art is brilliant. She holds a mirror to the world so that we can see it in all its hidden -- and not so hidden -- ugliest. Difficult it may be. Vital it is.
Elephants
The Grumpy Vegan and the artist, Sue Coe, are collaborating on a project about elephants. Here are some of my favourite Web sites.
- The Elephant Database - A primary source of facts and information about elephants presented on the Internet since 1995.
- The Elephant Sanctuary - The U.S.'s largest natural habitat refuge (Hohenwald, TN) for African and Asian elephants.
- Performing Animal Welfare Society - PAWS rescues and provides home to animals who have been the victims of the exotic and performing animal trades.
Hastings Old Town
This is where the Grumpy Vegan lives and it's a very special place, which he sometimes calls Trumpton. Some of these links, however, are not just to the Old Town but generally to Hastings.

Human-Animal Studies
Human-Animal Studies is the emerging academic field of study on how animals figure in our lives and we in theirs.
- American Sociological Association Animals and Society Section - The Animals and Society Section of the American Sociological Association.
- Animal Studies at Michigan State University - Several programs and courses in Human-Animal Studies.
- Animals and Society Institute - Visit ASI's new Web site to learn more about this independent research and educational organization that advances the status of animals in public policy and promotes the study of human-animal relationships. Kim W. Stallwood is ASI's European Director.
- British Animal Studies Network - A meeting point for scholars and others working in the field of Human-Animal Studies.
- British Sociological Association Animal/Human Studies Group - For British sociologists in Human-Animal Studies.
- Center on Animal Liberation Affairs - For the research and study of the principles and practices of animal rights and animal liberation.
- H-Animal - An on-line home for scholars across disciplines who are engaged on the study of animals in human culture.
- Humane Spot - HumaneSpot.org, a project of the Humane Research Council and an online animal advocacy resource center, puts together a powerful (and free) set of tools that are tailored to the needs of animal advocates.
- New Zealand Centre for Human-Animal Studies - Hosted by Canterbury University's School of Culture, Literature and Society, the Centre includes members across New Zealand who have expertise in cultural studies, literary studies, political science, sociology, architecture, the visual arts and Mâori studies.
- Suicide Food - Any depiction of animals that act as though they wish to be consumed.
- Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy - Supports and encourages scholarly evaluation and understanding of the complex societal issues and public policy dimensions of the changing role of animals in society.
Political Action for Animals
These groups are dedicated to advancing animal issues in the political arena.
- Humane Society Legislative Fund - An IRS 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization which works to pass animal protection laws at the state and federal level, educate the public about animal protection issues and support humane candidates for office.
- Labour Animal Welfare Society - An organisation for Labour Party members to promote and support animal welfare in the party.
- Mike Markarian Animals and Politics Blog - This is required reading if you want to see animal protection become a mainstream political issue.
- Mobilization - An international journal of research and theory specializing in social movements (the animal rights movement is a social movement), protests and collective behavior.
