Global catastrophe or sustainable future?

The world is rapidly approaching an unprecedented catastrophe from global climate change and other environmental threats, and a major societal shift to plant-based (vegan) diets is an essential part of the necessary responses to avoid that catastrophe. Since methane emitted by farmed animals is in the atmosphere for less than 20 years and is 72 times as potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide during that time, reducing the number of farmed animals would have a major, rapid effect in reducing climate change. A major shift to plant-centered diets would have many other benefits, including reducing diseases, hunger, water and energy shortages, rapid species extinction, water pollution, destruction of rainforests and other valuable habitats and soil erosion and depletion.

The Grumpy Vegan’s Latest Kitchen Gadget

Stirring the peanut butter before spreading provides excitement and anticipation.
Here’s the Grumpy Vegan’s latest kitchen gadget: Grandpa Witmer’s Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Mixer. First admired on a recent trip to the US, the Grumpy Vegan had to have one. So, one was brought back and with great disappointment discovered that EU jam jars are different in size from US ones. So, a wonderful friend sent from the US a jar of peanut butter just so that Grandpa Witmer’s churn could be, well, be stirred. Of course, the Grumpy Vegan peanut butter is still bought in large plastic tubs and the peanut butter still has to be stirred. But from now on stirred peanut butter will be spooned into the US jar just so that the Grumpy Vegan can demonstrate Grandpa Witmer’s Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Mixer to guests and visitors.

Hastings Old Town Carnival Week 2009

Shopkeepers in Pirate Week in the Old Town
We’re coming to the end of this year’s Old Town Carnival Week. We’ve had pram races (dressing up and drinking and pushing prams), free beach concerts, Old Town Crier competitions, guided walks and garden open days. Today is Pirate Day in the Old Town, which included a procession of children, old children and fantasists dressing up as pirates. Tonight, in The Stag, there’s an evening of pirate songs and sea shanties.

Aaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhh, mateys!
