Camels in Australia–Stupid Comment and Kill ‘Em

Animal welfare groups have accused the Australian government of being “trigger happy” over plans to shoot 6,000 camels that invaded an outback town in search of water.

The animals have caused chaos in the Northern Territory town of Docker River, smashing water tanks, destroying fences and approaching houses. State officials have described the siege as a “critical situation” and warned that the town did not “have the luxury of time”, after the camels blocked the town’s airstrip – preventing medical evacuations – and began to contaminate the water supply. Country Land & Business Association on Eating Less Meat

The CLA has today said calls to eat less meat to cut climate change are misguided and would only create other problems.

The CLA believes the real answer is to find new ways to produce meat with lower Green House Gas emissions. “Calls for people to give up eating meat to fight climate change are misjudged,” said CLA President William Worsley. “We must not forget that meat provides us with key nutrients.”

“Farming fewer livestock would only create other problems,” he said. “Milk from cows, for instance, is a key nutrient for the healthy development of young children. The only substitute available would be very large volumes of soya, but it should be remembered that soya farming has destroyed many thousands of acres of rainforest across the world and continues to do so.”

“There is much natural grazing in the world,” he said. “It makes little sense to plough up this land for human food crops which would in itself produce significant carbon emissions.”

“Climate change is an issue we take very seriously, but eating less meat would make little difference to it,” he said. “We believe that research into farming methods that limit the Green House Gases that cows and other livestock emit is the key to moving forward.”

You Would Think By Now

You would think by now that with all the blood we’ve spilt in our superstitious religious rites; in our political struggles for power and control; in animal research laboratories for our health and safety; in wars to determine our national boundaries; in slaughterhouses to feed us; in bullrings to entertain us; and in countless other places and times – we’d live in a world in which no one is poor, suffering or enslaved. It’s time to expose and reject all belief systems which are the expense of someone else. It’s time to discover those which reveal truths we can all believe in; which foster compassion to inspire us to act altruistically for others; which reveal non-violence as a way forward to fundamentally address the challenges we all face; and imbibe us with a sense of interbeing, the interrelatedness of all. Until then, things will not change. And yet more blood of the innocent will be needlessly spilt by the naive.

Stop and Think

The Grumpy Vegan rates very highly Erik Marcus, his books and his Web site. He goes a great service for veganism. Don’t always agree with him, which is true of everyone, so, what’s new? But every now and then Erik makes me stop and think, which isn’t true for most people. Gary Steiner’s Animal, Vegetable, Miserable was quite an enjoyable read until I read what Erik thought of it. See what you think.
