Signaling that the Agriculture Committee will not be exclusively the domain of growers and food producers, new Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg on Tuesday gave the committee a new name, an expanded mission and a new chairman. The committee will henceforth be called the Food and Agriculture Committee and will concern itself with issues relating not just to the production of agricultural goods but also such consumer-related issues as food safety and the treatment of farm animals.
