Hastings Veggie Dinner Club

The delicious vegan Moroccan-style meal!
The Hastings Veggie Dinner Club met this weekend at the delightful home of one of our members. We enjoyed a delicious vegan Moroccan-style meal and a selection of desserts which were prepared and cooked by a group of us. The savoury menu included a selection of salads featuring courgettes, an orange salad with soya yogurt and mint, a couscous salad, a tabouleh salad and bowls of marinated tomatoes and Hastings-grown olives. The hot savouries included a tofu and chickpea vegetable tajine featuring aubergines, Kefta meat balls and a “Cheatin’ chicken” flavoured with Moroccan spice. The dessert menu included chocolate cake covered with a chocolate ganache, tofu cheesecake and date squares with the secret ingredient of brandy!

Graun (The Guardian) Struggles (Again) with Vegetarianism

Mealy mouth article here. And “MasterChef” John Torode concludes after a week of vegetarianism.

I’ve done it: I’ve gone for a week without meat or fish. But God, am I looking forward to a decent meal. Fact is, I’m a carnivore. Cutting out meat or fish I could maybe just about manage – living without either? I can’t see myself doing that ever, ever, ever. Tonight I am going to have big, nice grilled steak and a simple tomato salad. It will be absolutely perfect.

Torode “runs” runs Smiths of Smithfield, London EC1. Need anymore be said?

Update on Susi at Barcelona Zoo

Remember, Susi?

Susi, the only elephant at the Barcelona zoo, lives in a small pen, has lost her best friend, and is said to be depressed. But now someone has come to her aid — not a fairy godmother or even a princess, but a queen. Spain’s Queen Sofia is asking Barcelona City Hall to move Susi, 36, to a larger space, perhaps at a safari-style park. The Foundation for the Adoption, Sponsorship and Defense of Animals said Wednesday that it wrote to the Royal Palace in February, and the queen promised to intervene. “The queen is very sympathetic to animals,” said foundation president Carla Cornella. “She wants to know what is the best situation for Susi.”
