British High Court Rules in BUAV’s Favor

Extensive video and documentary evidence collected by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection during a ten month undercover investigation of a Cambridge University neuroscience primate lab during 2000/2001 was used this week by the BUAV when it took the Home Office to the High Court requesting a Judicial Review in how it implements the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act.

The High Court agreed with the BUAV in that the Home Office was mislabeling experiments on animals by understating the severity of suffering the animals experienced. The Home Office is given leave to appeal and the High Court rejected three other claims made by the BUAV.

Nevertheless, this is a significant victory for the BUAV. This is because the government repeatedly claims the British law effectively protects animals used in laboratories.

The BBC reports BUAV’s Michelle Thew as saying

We have proven that the government misleads the public and Parliament about the severity of animal experiments licensed in the UK. The government can no longer pretend it has the strictest regulation of animal experiments in the world. This case demonstrates it has ridden roughshod over the public’s trust in this matter.

Shambo Taken to be Slaughtered

Shambo
Shambo’s Web cam now shows an empty stall. He’s been taken for slaughter. All because he’s tested positive to a routine Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) skin test. This means that he is suspected, not proven to carry Bovine TB. Under current British government policy, any animal suspected of carrying Bovine TB must be killed. He is a very healthy bull. If TB were to develop, he can be expected to make a full recovery given appropriate care.

What this means is that government policy toward farmed animals is to benefit the farmer, not the animals raised to be killed and eaten. In other words, its all about how much money can be made off the backs of animals.

The significant difference in this tragedy is that Shambo is considered by the Hindu Skanda Vale Monastery to be a terrestrial representative of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull.

Isn’t refreshing to see for a change an organized religion defending an animal’s life rather than calling for their murder?

The First CCA VP

This is me and Pauline Houliaras, CCA’s first vice president.

The first years of the Canton Community Association would not have been as successful as they were without Pauline’s enthusiastic and energetic involvement.

We didn’t know each other before we got involved with the CCA but we quickly became fast friends. She was the butt of my continual leg-pulling, including appointing myself as the chair of the “Pauline Houliaras Boy Friend Approval Committee”! I always had her best interests at heart, however. My standards were very high!

Her time is now devoted to her rescued pit bull, Raven. And, with her business partner Sue Loeffler, they are the Dog House Girls, a dog walking service in Canton, Fells Point and southeast Baltimore.

Pauline and Sue are completely trustworthy and we frequently relied upon them to look after Emmy whenever we were away.

The Three Amigos? No! The Three CCA Presidents!

From left to right Darryl Jurkiewicz, me and Steve Strohl
Here are the three CCA presidents to date: Darryl Jurkiewicz (the third one), me (the first one) and Steve Strohl (the second one). We had a final get together a few days before we left our neighborhood, Canton, in Baltimore.

The Canton Community Association is a terrific organization, which has achieved much in its relatively short history. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without all of the hard working volunteers.

We also had a lot of fun and got to know some wonderful people. And contrary to this photography I’m not sure if I would include Darryl and Steve in this exalted group ……..
