I am a great eater of beef, and I believe that does harm to my wit.

Being American is to eat a lot of beef steak, and boy, we’ve got a lot more beef steak than any other country, and that’s why you ought to be glad you’re an American. And people have started looking at these big hunks of bloody meat on their plates, you know, and wondering what on earth they think they’re doing.

Well, maybe, not everywhere but certainly in Ireland. Before the Vick dog-fighting confession in the U.S., there was Gerard Cavlan, a Tyrone Gaelic footballer, who was found by the Ulster SPCA to be involved with dog fighting. The BBC now reports
A Tyrone GAA star is a major figure in the illegal world of dog fighting, a BBC Spotlight investigation has found. Gerard Cavlan, an all-Ireland medal winner, is a senior figure in a County Armagh dog fighting operation known as The Bulldog Sanctuary Kennels. The 17-month investigation, led by reporter Mandy McAuley, uncovered 15 illegal dog fighting gangs in NI. Earlier this year, Cavlan, from Dungannon, was convicted of possessing a dangerous dog and fined £650. In April, his solicitor told Dungannon Magistrates Court that Cavlan had merely collected the dog from kennels for a Dublin man and was not involved in any other illegal activities. However, with the aid of a trained undercover operative and secret filming, the Spotlight team discovered that this was not true.
The Grumpy Vegan concludes that it’s not only male dogs who should be castrated for their own good ….
Every now and then, however, Canton reasserts itself in my presence.
For example, The New York Times is running a fluff piece about O’Donnell Square and its attractions of bars, restaurants and shops. I had a love/hate relationship with the square. There was nowhere where vegans could eat and all the bars were full of televisions showing sports programs. What you do in the privacy of your own home is one thing but really.
But then we heard that there had been a fire in the old Methodist Church one block down the street from our old home. The Canton Community Association, which I helped to direct, used to meet in this church. It’s really sad to see this gracious building be so damaged by a fire caused by an electrical fault.
A man of my spiritual intensity does not eat corpses.

The Grumpy Vegan welcomes this initiative. But thumbs down to PETA for its species-insensitive language, “Too chicken to go vegetarian?”
There’s also a thumbs down for the lets-not-rock-the-boat-too-much quotes from such environmental movement representatives as the Sierra Club’s, Carl Pope
We try to be strategic about doing the things where each unit of effort has the most impact. […] We’ll encourage companies to make more efficient S.U.V.’s, and we’ll encourage consumers to buy them but we do not find lecturing people about personal consumption choices to be effective.
Huh? The Sierra Club doesn’t promote citizen action when it helps the planet?
