Thought for the Day

On the other hand, look at the revolting ruffianism with which our Christian public treats its animals; killing them for no object at all, and laughing over it, or mutilating or torturing them: even its horses, who form its most direct means of livelihood, are strained to the utmost in their old age, and the last strength worked out of their poor bones until they succumb at last under the whip. One might say with truth, Mankind are the devils of the earth, and the animals the souls they torment.

Arthur Schopenhauer, 1788 – 1860, German philosopher

Thought for the Day

On the day after the F.D.A. Says Food From Cloned Animals Is Safe a report by the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies “doubts as to whether cloning animals for food supply is ethically justified.”

The group said that surrogates carrying cloned embryos could suffer and that the clones themselves experienced a high rate of disease and other health problems that include increased weight, malformations, respiratory problems, enlarged livers, hemorrhaging and kidney abnormalities.

In cattle, the group’s statement said, about 20 percent of cloned calves do not survive the first 24 hours after birth and an additional 15 percent die before weaning.

Thought for the Day

It was a choppy day on the high seas of the Antarctic. Two members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, whose ships have been pursuing a Japanese whaling fleet for nearly a month, claimed that – in freezing conditions – they were for three hours tied to the railings of a Japanese vessel after boarding it to deliver a letter of protest. Back on dry land, the Humane Society International won an injunction in Australia’s federal court against the Japanese company Kyodo Senpaku Kaisha, to stop it whaling inside Australian-declared waters. The two developments are connected. In one, the eco-pirate Paul Watson, a man who has been ramming and scuttling whalers and drift-net fishers for many years, was rightly preventing the whalers from reaping their annual harvest. In the other, the ruling increased the pressure on the Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd, to enforce the promise he made to his voters last year to crack down on Japanese whaling. One action is beyond the law, although Mr Watson believes whales are more intelligent than humans, and says that the actions of his Sea Shepherd enforce a higher law than the one currently operating on the high seas. The other action uses the existing law to advance the same cause. Both have their place. Applauding people who do brave things because they believe their cause is right does not mean giving every lawbreaker a green light. But Watson has arguably done more to publicise his cause than most, and it is the result that matters.

In praise of … taking on the whalers

Thought for the Day

Arna and Gigi spent yesterday getting to know Burma, Western Plains Zoo’s resident Asian elephant.

Arna, the so-called ‘killer’ elephant, yesterday was “cool, calm and collected” as she and her companion Gigi made their debut at Western Plains Zoo.
Senior elephant keeper Roger Brogan said the new arrivals were very relaxed despite a tearful farewell with their circus handlers on Monday.

“Arna is cool, calm and collected. She and Gigi are busy getting to know their surroundings,” he said.

Arna and Gigi arrived early Monday morning after a 14-hour drive from the north coast.

Mr Brogan said the elephants and their circus handlers had an emotional farewell on Monday.

“Their handlers were very upset … there were plenty of tears,” he said.

“They were heart-broken. Arna and Gigi were the first things the handlers would see when they woke up of a morning.

“Arna and Gigi were their life … it’s a pretty big thing to say good-bye.”

Mr Brogan said the elephants were confused when the truck that had been their home left without them.

“The truck they arrived in was their home. They had never seen it drive off before. Their handlers said even when the truck needed repairs the elephants would go with it,” he said.

“We tried to keep them calm but they were obviously shaken.”

Life no longer a circus for duo
