Every now and then, however, Canton reasserts itself in my presence.
For example, The New York Times is running a fluff piece about O’Donnell Square and its attractions of bars, restaurants and shops. I had a love/hate relationship with the square. There was nowhere where vegans could eat and all the bars were full of televisions showing sports programs. What you do in the privacy of your own home is one thing but really.
But then we heard that there had been a fire in the old Methodist Church one block down the street from our old home. The Canton Community Association, which I helped to direct, used to meet in this church. It’s really sad to see this gracious building be so damaged by a fire caused by an electrical fault.
