Two Important Victories!

The Grumpy Vegan is late in sharing with you excellent news about two important victories in animal welfare and public policy. The first is the European Commission’s adoption of a proposal

banning the trading of seal products within, into, and from the European Union to ensure that products derived from seals killed and skinned in ways that cause pain, distress and suffering are not found on the European market. Trade in seal products would only be allowed where guarantees can be provided that hunting techniques consistent with high animal-welfare standards were used and that the animals did not suffer unnecessarily.

This measure will further help to end the Canadian and other seal kills around the world, including the U.K.!

The second accomplishment is the unanimous decision of the New Jersey Supreme Court’s decision to

strike down the state’s Department of Agriculture’s regulations exempting all routine husbandry practices as “humane” and ordered the agency to readdress many of the state-mandated standards for the treatment of animals.

Congratulations to all the individuals and organizations that helped to make this possible!
