The Hastings Obscurer

The wonderful socialist novel, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist, was written by Robert Tressell, who lived part of his life in Hastings and St. Leonards on Sea. The Hastings Museum has a good page on Tressell. The novel was published posthumously in 1914.

Nearly 100 years later the local paper, The Hastings Observer, continues to be an embarrassment to the community and rightly deserves to be continued to be referred to as The Obscurer.

For example, enjoy this tragic report of a shopper dieing in the local supermarket, Morrisons, last night.

More concern is expressed about the alarm of shoppers having to witness a corpse wheeled past their full shopping trolleys (Americans: read carts) at the checkout than there is about such a tragedy occurring in the first place. Talk about creating a media sensation when there’s neither any sensation nor any media!

The Obscurer, an embarrassment to the town and surrounding area: It’s badly written. There’s no attempt at any copy editing. It’s politically biased. Fact checking appears to be nonexistent. There is no design. The Grumpy Vegan refuses to pay 40p each week for such rubbish.
