Regular readers to this blog will know an annoyance of the Grumpy Vegan’s is The Guardian<\/em>‘s patronising and, frankly, stupid attitude toward and coverage of … all things vegan. This includes George Monbiot, its ‘star’ environmental, investigative reporter. George invariably gets it right (or left, I should say) in my book but where we part is on the issues of nuclear energy and (you’ve guessed it) meat eating, vegetarianism and veganism. He’s defended some meat eating in previous columns but come to his senses in this one.<\/p>\n

‘Why vegans were right all along: Famine can only be avoided if the rich give up meat, fish and dairy<\/a>‘ concludes with this paragraph:<\/p>\n

As a meat-eater, I’ve long found it convenient to categorise veganism as a response to animal suffering or a health fad. But, faced with these figures, it now seems plain that it’s the only ethical response to what is arguably the world’s most urgent social justice issue. We stuff ourselves, and the poor get stuffed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here’s another pithy comment to consider:<\/p>\n

Within as little as 10 years, the world will be faced with a choice: arable farming either continues to feed the world’s animals or it continues to feed the world’s people. It cannot do both.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
